Understand the excavator models and sizes on the market

February 27,2024

The model of an excavator is generally composed of letters and numbers. Common excavator models and their meanings are as follows. 1. Symbols with numbers (such as -7, -9, etc.) can often be seen in Japanese and Korean brands as well as domestic excavator models, indicating the generation of this product. For example, -8 in the Komatsu PC200-8 indicates that it is Komatsu's 8th generation model, and -7 in the Doosan DH300LC-7 indicates that it is Doosan's 7th generation model. 2. The letter L is used in many excavator models with the word "L", which refers to the "extended track". The purpose is to increase the contact area between the track and the ground, and is generally used in construction conditions where the ground is soft. 3. The letter LC is a more common symbol in excavators, and all brands have excavators in the "LC" style, such as Komatsu PC200LC-8, Doosan DX300LC-7, Yuchai YC230LC-8, Shensteel SK350LC-8, and so on.

General standard for distinguishing the size of excavators in China

At present, several mainstream second-hand excavator sales platforms in China classify machines into small and micro sizes. Generally speaking, micro excavators are classified as below 5 tons, while small excavators are defined as models between 5 and 15 tons.

1. Small models weighing less than 15 tons, with mainstream models ranging from 5 to 8 tons. Small excavators are mainly used in municipal engineering, trenching, factory construction, landscaping and other work conditions that require meticulous operation.

2. 15 to 35 tons are medium-sized, with 20 to 25 tons being the mainstream model, and it is also the most widely used among all models. Except for limited site conditions (such as indoor) that cannot operate, it can be applied to almost all working conditions, such as municipal engineering, earthwork, road construction, mining, and land reclamation.

3. 35 tons or more are considered large. Choose the model according to the capacity requirements, the larger the tonnage, the larger the bucket. Generally used in large-scale earthworks and open-pit mining conditions.

Classification standards for excavator size in other countries

There is no unified standard for the size division of excavators. Here, Chen Wei has compiled the size division standards of representative brands of excavators from the United States, South Korea, and Japan for comparison and understanding.

1. Caterpillar

Caterpillar is a brand in the United States, classified into five categories: mini excavators weighing less than 10 tons, small excavators weighing 11-19 tons, medium excavators weighing 20-35 tons, large excavators weighing 36-90 tons, and mining hydraulic excavators weighing over 100 tons.

2. Hyundai Korea

Modern excavators in South Korea are roughly divided in size, with only three types: small excavators weighing less than 6 tons, medium excavators weighing between 8-40 tons, and large excavators weighing over 40 tons.

3. Hitachi Construction Machinery

Hitachi excavators are divided into four categories: mini excavators weighing less than 6 tons, small excavators weighing 7-12 tons, medium excavators weighing 17-40 tons, and large excavators weighing 40-100 tons.
